You have mastered serves but now you doubt your returns, or all of your returns have been contested? Follow along to learn more about Padel’s returns.
Key Conditions for a Correct Return:
Interaction with the Opponent: The return is valid if the ball:
- Is volleyed by an opponent after you hit it.
- Hits any part of the opponent’s body, clothing, or racket unintentionally.
Ball’s Trajectory: The return is valid if:
- The ball bounces in the opposing court, either directly or off a wall on your side.
- It lands in the opponent’s court and then touches the metallic fence or wall.
- It bounces in the opponent’s court and exits (e.g., hitting the ceiling, lights, or other objects).
Touching the Net
- If the ball touches the net or net posts and still lands correctly in the opponent’s court, it counts as a valid return.
Hitting Objects on the Ground
- If the ball hits an object (like another ball) lying on the ground in the opponent’s court, the return is valid, but play continues—you don’t win the point automatically (as clarified in Case 1).
Opponent’s Rebound Play
- If the ball bounces correctly in the opponent’s court but returns to your side due to spin or force, and the opponent hits it back without touching the net or your court, the play continues.
Push or Scoop Returns
If a player “scoops” or pushes the ball, the return is valid as long as:
- It’s a single movement.
- The natural flight of the ball is not significantly altered.
Special Corner Cases
- A ball that bounces in the corner where the wall meets the ground (known as an “egg”) is considered a valid return.
Out-of-Court Play
- Returns made from outside the court are valid, as long as all other conditions for a valid return are met.
Bonus Question
- Scenario: If the ball lands on an object (like another ball) in the opponent’s court after your return, you might think you’ve won the point.
- Decision: No, you haven’t won the point—the play continues.
